The gardens of Japan House remain free and open to the public at this time but the tea garden is closed for spring cleaning. Japan House is a university teaching facility and the building is used as a classroom for students taking university courses in Japanese arts and aesthetics during the week. Her legacy reaches beyond the walls of a structure, as it lives within the heart of every student and guest who visits Japan House. Everyday we cannot help but feel already consumed by all that needs to be accomplished. Ironically, it seems easier to bury ourselves in more and more of our already overwhelming lives. The roots of Japan House go back to the 1960s teachings of Shozo Sato. This permanent facility opened in 1998 under the direction of Kimiko Gunji.

So we try to limit our involvement to those things that require our special skills, equipment or materials. Any task not requiring those things can be done by a skilled local contractor probably as well as we could, only a lot cheaper, and probably faster too. It's also worth noting that local people don't need to be paid per diem and travel expenses. When he introduced this plan to Gunji, she loved it; however, the Japan House did not have the funding for such an elaborate garden. Bier decided to donate his own funds and volunteer his own time to the project. After years of cultivating his own gardens, he wanted to move on to something larger, and of higher quality.
